What is Intarsia?

Intarsia is mosaic of wood fitted and glued onto a wooden support. This art form was made popular in 15th century Italy. All of the color in the piece comes from the wood. Neither stain nor paint is used in this process. Each part of the pattern is cut and shaped by hand. For this reason each piece is a one-of-a-kind item.

The primary instruments used in the process are scroll saws and sanders.? Each piece of the mosaic is cut and checked for fit using a scroll saw, as with the Labrador Retriever below.

Once the pieces fit properly various sanders, and shims, are used to give the project a three dimensional look.? The final piece with a description of the woods used is below.
